Romantic Road

May 29 - June 9, 2010

The Romantic Road is a 450 km section of one of Germany's most picturesque highways, stretching from Würzburg in Bavaria's north to Füssen near the Austrian border.

A trade route during the middle ages, the Romantic Road still retains much of its medieval character. The road often winds through forgotten sections of countryside, connecting walled towns and picturesque villages. Travelers may enter a town through an arched gateway complete with guard towers. Inside, you will find gothic cathedrals, half-timbered fachwerk houses, beautiful historic hotels and often a medieval festival.

Along the route are many favourite tourist towns and attractions, including Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl, Augsburg, and Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles.

The Romantic Road long-distance cycle route is part of the ADFC cycle-route network and takes cyclists down idyllic secondary roads running through unspoilt countryside, along quiet country roads and gravel forest paths, past pastures, meadows and ponds, to romantic places and fascinating towns that make the Romantic Road so unique.

Quebec

August 22 - 27, 2010

The reputation of the province of Quebec as a tourist destination with a difference is well known.

Between quiet villages and the bustling cities, you can discover the true meaning of Quebec’s legendary wide open spaces you have heard so much about and that have made the reputation of Quebec as an exceptional travel destination.

Its numerous national parks hide well-kept treasures that turn out to be magnificent for those who dare reveal them.

The region you will discover on this tour is Quebec City and surrounding area, which has some of the prettiest and most interesting natural and built attractions in Canada.

Quebec City is the cradle of French Civilization in North America, and celebrates its 400th anniversary in 2008. In addition to being historically significant (it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Quebec City also boasts some of the better restaurants in Canada.

Our tour starts in Quebec City and goes from there around Ile d'Orleans where we stay one night. The next day we bike towards Mont Ste Anne visiting Montmorency Falls before heading to the pilgrimage site of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre where we will spend two nights and bike in the area. The last day we bike back to Quebec City.

Price: $1,095 double occupancy

Finger Lakes Area, New York
September 11 - 16, 2010

Far removed from the bustling streets of New York City rests one of New York State's most treasured destinations: the Finger Lakes Region. World-renowned for its production of award-winning wines, this natural wonderland offers one of the most visually stunning and peaceful getaways in the United States.

Native American legend explains Finger Lakes this way: the Creator looked upon this land with special favour and reached down to bless it, leaving the imprint of his hand …..the Finger Lakes.

The lakes were actually formed when the last ice age ended and the glaciers receded. In addition to the spectacular lakes the region includes incredible gorges and over 1,000 waterfalls.

We start in Waterloo and follow the wine trail on the West side of Lake Seneca and proceed to Watkins Glen where we visit Watkins Glen State Park and walk along the gorge to view the 19 waterfalls and cascades. Don't forget to bring your camera! We will also have an opportunity to take a dinner cruise on the lake.

From Watkins Glen we ride to Ithaca, home to Cornell University which has 150 waterfalls within the downtown area alone!

We proceed to Taughannock Falls (higher than Niagara Falls) before we return to Waterloo along the Cayuga Lake wine trial.

Provence, France
September 18 - September 28, 2010

Provence combines an interesting mix of warm stone villages, Roman ruins, magnificent art, and history galore – and did we mention wine and French cuisine?

For the first part of the tour we will be based in a village at the foot of the Alpilles, in the heart of Provence between Arles and Avignon where we will be staying in four-star Gites (country villas). We will be within easy biking distance of

  • Avignon  - the papal city

  • Arles  - where van Gogh painted many of his most famous paintings. Also known for its well-preserved Roman arena

  • St. Remy-de-Provence - a wonderful market town

  • Glanum - an old Roman town

  • Les Baux de Provence  - a huge medieval castle

  • Pont du Gard  - a perfectly preserved Roman Aqueduct

  • Camargue - known for its wild horses and pink flamingoes

You will not only visit Provence, you will experience it.

The second part of the tour will take us to Cassis with its spectacular Calanques, St. Cyr-sur-Mer and an opportunity to swim in the Mediterranean, and end the tour in Marseille,  the port city settled by the Phoenicians and which recently celebrated its 2,600th anniversary.

Tuscany, Italy
October 2 - 9, 2010

If you ask anyone what their dream destination is for a bike tour, for many Tuscany would be at the top of the list. Tuscany (Toscana in Italian) located in the central region of Italy has so many things going for it that one can understand why people rave about it. A wonderful climate, history covering thousands of years, beautiful landscapes, hilltop villages, and vineyards. And don’t forget the Italian cuisine!

The first 2 days we stay in Florence and explore its many cultural and historical sites such as the Uffizi Gallery with the greatest collection of Italian renaissance paintings in the world and Accademia (Michaelangelo's David).

From Florence we bike through Tuscan hills in the Chianti wine region and visit the hilltop town of Radda before entering Siena where we spend a day exploring a city that once was the rival of Florence. From Siena we bike to the wonderfully picturesque hilltop town of San Gimignano and on the last day bike back to Florence through the spectacular countryside.
